JUNIOR guitar programme

HARNESS YOUR CHILD’S MUSICAL POTENTIAL WITH OUR STRUCTURED, FUN & SOCIABLE GUITAR LESSONS FOR 7-11 YEAR OLDS.

PROGRAMME INFO

Juniors

Your child will be shown everything they need to know to get started on their guitar-playing journey.

We start with 5 x 30 minute private lessons, where we’ll show you and your child how our method works, get them started and help you set up a practice routine at home.  You’ll receive all learning materials your child will need for the Junior course at their first lesson.

We are currently offering the first 5 lessons plus learning materials at a special rate of just £79.

After this, they’ll be ready to start attending our small group classes (max. 5 students) so that they can continue their learning alongside other children of a similar age & level.  We encourage all students to learn in small groups as it has been proven to be the most effective way to learn.

  • Designed specifically for children aged 7-11
  • Our structured method will give them a sense of progress & accomplishment
  • All our teachers are trained & DBS checked
  • Support for parents so you can help your child practice at home

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Structured Method – Our Junior course is intended as an introduction to guitar for children aged 7-11 & we believe it to be the quickest & easiest way to learn!  Incorporating all the essential skills they will need to get started, your child will have the basics down in no time and will soon be playing the songs they love.
  • Checklists & Rewards – The Junior course includes checklists so that you’ll know exactly what your child needs to focus on next, with rewards given when they reach certain milestones.  This will help to keep them engaged in the learning process.  On completion of our Junior course, your child will receive a certificate & be ready to move up to the next level.
  • Additional Resources & Opportunities – We provide a range of exciting resources, both online & offline.  This includes song charts, free workshops & the chance to perform at our regular student events (which are always a lot of fun!).  We aim to make the learning process fun, which will help your child stay motivated on their path to guitar greatness.
  • Parent Support – We provide support to parents, including a Parent Guide and useful blog posts so that you can help your child practice at home.  You will need to supervise your child’s practice, especially in the early days, and in turn we will help you to make practice sessions a fun and positive experience for your child.

    FAQ’s

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN GUITAR?

This depends on a number of factors.  All students begin by taking our 5 Week Intro course, which gives us a chance to introduce our method, establish some basic techniques & set up a practice routine.

At the end of the 5 weeks, most students will have covered the basics & will be well on their way to learning their first song.  It is important to understand, however, that like any skill, learning guitar takes time & persistence, which is why regular practice is essential in order to see lasting progress.  We recommend around 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week for our Junior students.

The first few months will be spent developing core techniques but, providing the recommended practice is being met, your child should complete our first Junior level within 6-12 months & be able to play a variety of songs, riffs & melodies.

WHAT TYPE OF GUITAR SHOULD WE BUY?

Your child will need their own guitar to participate in our programme.  For a child aged 7–11, you will need either a 1/2 or 3/4 size classical guitar.  Classical guitars look similar to acoustic guitars but have nylon strings, which are softer on a child’s fingertips.  If your child wants to rock, you can also get electric guitar starter packs suitable for children (this should be a personal decision made by you & your child – there is certainly no requirement to start on one kind of instrument & “progress” to the other).

Either way, our best advice is to buy from a local music shop, rather than buy online, so that you know you will be getting an instrument appropriate for your child’s age & size.  Please contact us if you’d like more information.

    HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

We start all students on our 5 Week Intro Course, which consists of 5 x 30 minute weekly private lessons.  Here, we’ll show you and your child how our method works, get them started and help you set up a practice routine at home.  You’ll receive all learning materials your child will need for the Junior course at their first lesson.

We are currently offering the first 5 lessons plus learning materials at a special rate of just £79.

After this, they’ll be ready to start attending our small group classes (max. 5 students) so that they can continue learning alongside other children of a similar age & level.  We encourage all students to learn in small groups as it has been proven to be the most effective way to learn.

    WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

Our teaching rooms are situated on the 4th floor of The Business Xchange Hub in Lansdowne Road, Croydon.  We are centrally located, very close to Wellesley Road tram stop, local bus routes & a short walk from East Croydon station.  There are also various parking options nearby.  We have a waiting area, free WIFI & tea & coffee making facilities on site.

    DO YOU DO IN-HOME LESSONS?

We are unable to come to your home & teach your child.  All lessons take place at our central Croydon location above.

HOW MUCH SHOULD MY CHILD PRACTICE?

Children often enjoy the lessons but not the practice, especially if they see it as a chore.

In order to get results & see some progress, however, your child will need to practice regularly.  For Junior students, we recommend 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week.  We encourage parents to help their child establish a practice routine as quickly as possible & be present & engaged, especially in the early days.  After a while, you will be able to step away as your child starts to see results, which will enable them to enjoy the process of learning.

We have lots of information to help parents make their child’s practice fun & engaging, as regular practice is essential to your child’s continued progress.

    DO YOU TEACH GRADES?

The method we use will introduce your child to all the fundamental elements covered in guitar grades & because of the step by step way in which it is laid out, is actually more effective than grades for getting these core skills down.

Once students finish our own method, they will have all the skills in place to be able to quickly and easily study for grade exams.  Please ask us for more information if this is something you would like your child to do.

My name is Vicki Workman and, here at Croydon Guitar Tuition, my teachers and I have helped many children get started on guitar.  Guitar is a sociable instrument and your child will have the most fun and make the most progress learning with others.  Many of our current students started with us at just 7 or 8 years old and now, as teenagers, are at grade 7-8 standard and regularly jam together and even form bands!  We encourage collaboration, not just with other guitar players but also with other musicians, and our students get regular opportunities to perform at special events run by us and in the wider Croydon music community.

After all, this is what playing guitar should be all about!

Learning guitar from a young age will nurture a life-long love of music in your child and give them a fun and rewarding skill which will stay with them throughout their life.  We look forward to welcoming them into our community of dedicated guitar players 🙂
